History of Company Operations

Marubun's pioneering spirit and foresight
always keeps us at the forefront of the times.



1840's - 1940's

1844 Dry goods wholesaler "Horikoshi" started a business, at the site of the present company headquarters, that went by the name "Marubun"; later operations were expanded to include export of silk thread and import of Western dry goods.
1897 The dry goods wholesale business discontinued; Horikoshi Office established to manage the property.
1928 The Horikoshi Company established as a limited partnership to preserve the property.
1946 Nakazen Trading Company established to sell machinery, instruments and daily-use sundries.
1947 The Horikoshi Company merged with Nakazen Trading Company to form the new Marubun Corp., capitalized at ¥ 7.03 million.
1948 Started business as an exporter and importer mainly of machinery, instruments, and daily-use sundries.
1949 Founded Maruizumi K.K. as a 50-50 joint venture with Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo K.K. (forerunner of Sony Corp.).



1950's

1952 Contracted with Rocke International, Inc., to serve as their representative office, and began import and sales of American machinery.
1957 Started to handle measuring instruments. Subsequently expanded lines of business to import and sell many types of foreign products, including aviation and space equipment, laser equipment and analysis equipment.
1958 Established a Technology Office to begin technical servicing of imported equipment.
Started handling Texas Instruments products including transistors, diodes and semiconductors.



1960's - 1970's

1961 Kanazawa Branch Office became independent as Marubun Kanazawa Co., Ltd. (presently Marubun Tsusho Co., Ltd.).
1964 Started handling aeronautics/space equipment and laser equipment.
1965 Marubun was first in Japan to import and sell integrated circuits, made by Texas Instruments Inc. of the United States.
1967 Started operations industrial and analytical equipment.
1968 Established representative office in the United States.
1969 IC group specializing in sales of semiconductors established.
1970 "Marubun Electronics Show" held to commemorate 125 years since the company's inauguration, establishing Marubun's position as an importer of advanced equipment into Japan.



1980's

1980 Contracted with Texas Instruments Japan Ltd. to serve as their sales representative.
1982 Contracted with Seiko Epson Corp. to serve as their sales representative; became the world's first trading company to handle foundry business.
1983 American representative office went independent as Marubun USA Corp.
1984 Started to do business with Nippon Motorola Ltd., expanding business in semiconductor products.
1985 Established Minamisuna Distribution Center.
1988 Established Marubun Electronics (S) Pte. Ltd.
1989 Established Marubun Taiwan Inc.



1990's

1990 Introduced the industry's first barcode system for inventory control
1994 Established Marubun Hong Kong Ltd.
1997 Listed on the 2nd Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
Established the Marubun Research Promotion.
1998 Established Marubun/Arrow Asia Limited.
Started joint-venture business with Arrow Electronics, Inc. of the United States of America.
1999 Established Marubun/Arrow USA, LLC.
Established Foresight Techno Co., Ltd.



From 2000's to the present

2000 Introduced a company system within a corporation.
2001 Listed on the 1st Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
Obtained ISO 14001.
Established East Japan Logistics Center Shinsuna Warehouse, logistics dedicated to semiconductors.
2002 Established Marubun Information Communication Corporation.
2005 Established Marubun Semicon Corporation to sell SUMSUNG Semiconductors.
Kobe Branch Office became independent as Marubun West Corporation.
Contracted with Altera Japan, Ltd. to serve as their PLD sales representative.
2007 Obtained ISO 9001.
